Print Management That Works With Everything

Most IT environments are mixed by design, and for good reason: different teams need different tools.

Your finance team lives on Windows laptops. Your designers insist on Macs. Engineering runs Linux workstations. Layer on different identity providers, and you have an environment that is diverse by design.

1. Does every platform work well with the solution? Ask for a demonstration on each operating system you use.

2. How does it work with your identity provider today? Look for documented, supported integrations with your providers, and ask what changes if you add or switch one later.

3. Does it depend on a print server? If it does, ask how non-Windows clients are handled and who maintains that layer.

4. Where does policy live? You want one place to set it, not one per operating system.

5. What can an end user do without IT? On a traditional print server, end users need IT assistance to use a new printer. Look for a self-service portal that lets people intuitively find and add the printers they're permitted to use, on whatever device they're on, while IT keeps control of what's available to them.

Your environment is going to keep getting more varied. New device types will arrive, acquisitions will bring their own identity providers, and different teams will keep choosing the tools that suit their work. Printing shouldn't be the one thing that pushes back.
