Manufacturing Digital Transformation Has a Blind Spot: Print

By most measures, manufacturers are taking modernization seriously. In a 2025 survey of 600 manufacturing executives, 80% said they plan to put at least 20% of their improvement budgets toward smart manufacturing initiatives, on top of what they're already spending on automation, sensors, and cloud infrastructure.
And yet, that ambition hasn’t reached its full potential. In a McKinsey survey of manufacturing COOs published in December 2025, only 2% said AI was now fully embedded across their operations, while roughly two-thirds put their companies' progress at the exploration or targeted-pilot stage. Somewhere between the investment and the outcome, there are obstacles preventing progress.

Digitization vs. Digitalization vs. Digital Transformation
These three terms get used interchangeably, but they describe three different levels of change, and manufacturing's print problem sits right at the fault line between them.
Digitization is simply converting analog information into digital form: scanning a paper work order into a PDF. The Blind Spot in the Smart Factory
It's an easy layer to overlook, because print doesn't look like a strategic system. It looks like a printer. But behind that printer on the plant floor can be a fragile chain of print servers, scripts, and manual driver installs that IT inherited rather than designed, plus a completely separate pipeline pushing labels, shipping documents, and production orders out of the ERP system.
When that chain breaks, the consequences aren't abstract. A failed print server can halt output across an entire facility. A mislabeled shipment triggers a retailer chargeback. Print sits inside that same gap: it is often the last system standing between a digital record and a physical action. A label is the point where a digital record turns into something a forklift driver, a quality inspector, or a customer's receiving dock can act on. Traceability, quality control, and supply chain visibility, three things every manufacturer says they want from digital transformation, all run through that label.
